Back to basics
How can you cut down expenditure if your income is diminishing or limited? Get back to thinking in the student way. Here's Martin Lewis explaining to students at the LSE how they should start thinking about their money. Good advice even for those of us who've been out of education for decades.

Salesman's wisdom
You may not think your work, or your job seeking if your are out of work, is anything like sales. I'd beg to differ. In fact, if you pay attention to the guidance in the video below, you should be able to see how applying the 'savings' metaphor in your own actions can be enormously beneficial whatever the activity.
To summarise: set a time, set a goal, do it before you do anything else. [For those who don't know how to 'save': decide the sum you are going to save each time you receive income, put it aside as savings regardless of all other calls on your income, do it without exception.] There you go, success in life, riches in old age.
