Alfred Nobel's anniversary

Today, the 10th December, is the day of the Nobel Prize award ceremonies, where the great and the good are feted, often a very long time after completing the work for which they are nominated the award. I'm sure none of the people receiving the award will have set out to obtain one. In fact, there is an awful lot of research going on all the time that never seems to get appropriate publicity. Some research, however, is so crass, there is another kind of 'award' that perhaps recipient's aren't so happy about receiving? (or maybe not?) The igNobel awards are handed out in October.
