Does your employer insist on clear desks? Are you required to clear up your work in progress just so that the cleaner has a clear run through the late night office duties? Does it really matter that you have an in and out tray heaving with documents and folders? Security surely can't be the key concern as office laptop and flash drive losses are far more catastrophic. La Lobster's favorite TV series The Green Wing often featured the poor put upon office administrator with multiple responsibilities with a heaving desk loaded with files and paperwork. Yet it was this character who was clearly the most diligent and productive of the whole office. A situation La Lobster recognises as pretty close to true for a number of employees in real life. Productive people often do work with everything 'to hand' - even high tech employers recognise this fact:
